As you are aware, HDEAA does not agree with the assignment of traffic or parking lot duty to our members, however we continue to hear from members who are being assigned this duty and have concerns.
Here are some safety practices for you to consider:
- safety vests should be provided by the school and worn
- be visible: nothing should impede you from seeing traffic or traffic from seeing you
- if standing at the parking lot entrance, stay on school property, do not step into the road
- be aware of the Ontario and HDSB Codes of Conduct and report those who are in violation of them to your supervisor and fill out an EIR Form (Employee Incident Form)
If you are ever feeling unsafe with this duty (or in the workplace), please call or email us and we can help you navigate next steps.

A Shared Responsibility
When students, staff and parents/guardians work together to create safe, caring, equitable and inclusive schools, it has a powerful impact on the climate of the school. Each partner has an important contribution to make toward the establishment of a positive school climate in which all members of the school community feel safe, included, accepted, and actively promote positive behaviours and interactions.
