’tis the Season for Field Trips

HDEAA expects when a field trip is planned:

  • that an EA will be given advanced notice of trip when possible, unless it is to cover an unexpected absence
  • that existing safety plans are reviewed to apply to the destination and the transportation of the planned trip
  • that a plan for toileting safely be considered before the planned trip
  • that an EA understands it is not the expectation of the Board that EAs be required to use their personal vehicle to transport students – HDEAA reminds you that there is liability if this is done

Here’s what you need to know according to HDEAA’s Collective Agreement:

  • the principal/supervisor (not another educator) will make every attempt to provide regularly scheduled breaks, lunch period, and regularly scheduled work hours**

**In the event that it is not possible to have regularly scheduled breaks or the field trip runs over your regular work hours:

  • the employee compensation will be provided as lieu time
  • internal coverage for lieu time must be arranged
  • the employee and Principal/Supervisor will agree to the dates the scheduled lieu time will be taken.
